Books, puzzles, challenges and and plenty of creative thinking filled Graceview as our students and teachers celebrated Literacy and Numeracy Week.
Throughout the week, students took part in activities designed to celebrate the skills they use every day to read, write, communicate, calculate, reason and solve problems. It was an opportunity to take literacy and numeracy beyond regular classroom lessons and enjoy them in different ways across the school community.
“Literacy is important in life because it's one of the main things that you do. You have to know grammar and how to write and read.” - Savannah, Year 4
"Books show other people’s imaginations and share them with the world. They can show morals or lessons that we have learned in life, or just be for fun.” - Stella, Year 6
The week also celebrated the joy of books and reading, culminating in our much-loved Primary Book Character Parade. Students arrived dressed as characters from stories they know and love, filling the school with an impressive collection of costumes, creativity and imagination.
“Book Parade was very fun. There were all these different costumes with new, unique ideas, and everyone loved that day.” - Luca, Year 4
“Every grade got to make their own costumes and march around and show off our handmade costumes. It was really fun. And it was really cute seeing all the little kids as their book characters.” - Summer, Year 6
Literacy and numeracy are foundational to learning and help young people understand, communicate and engage thoughtfully with the world around them. Literacy and Numeracy Week gives us the chance to celebrate that important learning while reminding students that words, numbers and ideas can also be creative, interesting and fun.
A big thank you to our teachers and staff who brought the week to life, and to our families for creating such a colourful Book Parade.
