Colourful costumes, delicious international foods and country profile displays transformed our Year 4 classroom as students welcomed parents, families and friends to their annual Cultural Afternoon.
Throughout the term, students researched a country of their choice, exploring its history, geography, traditions, language, landmarks and way of life. The afternoon was a celebration of their learning, with each student proudly sharing their discoveries through creative displays, traditional dress and food from around the world.
For many students, the project opened their eyes to things they had never known before.
"I learnt that the Mona Lisa is the most visited artwork in the world. It was fun learning all the details, like how to say 'hello' in French and learning about all the monuments." - Ayla
Students also began thinking more deeply about the people, cultures and communities that make up our world.
"Learning about Fiji showed me how other countries are sustainable and how Australia can become more sustainable if everyone works together. It helped me think about being good citizens." - Naiya
As our visitors explored the projects, students enthusiastically stepped into the role of tour guides, confidently answering questions and sharing what they had learnt.
Aston, who researched Great Britain, loved being in character and welcomed guests to his display as though they were visiting a British shop.
"Learning about other countries helps you know more about them. If you ever visit, you'll know about their landmarks and what makes them special." - Aston
The project also encouraged students to reflect on how learning about different cultures shapes the way we relate to others.
"Learning about other countries helps you learn how other people live. It can make you more kind and caring." - Evelyn
At Graceview, we believe learning about the world helps students become thoughtful, compassionate and globally minded citizens. By exploring different cultures, traditions and perspectives, students build knowledge and also develop curiosity, respect and an appreciation for the rich diversity of God's world.
